Letter from Teddy Sumner
Teddy with Eagle

Dear Reader,

For much of my life I have been intrigued by the connections between art, traditional cultures, and the natural environment. As a teenager I thought I'd become an ecologist. In college I studied painting and botany, allowing me to explore some of these connections in greater depth. But, ultimately, it was the world of handmade rugs that fully captured my imagination. Here were beautiful, yet utilitarian objects, hand-woven in places like India, China and Nepal, that seemed to perfectly embody art and ancient traditions, people and their physical environment, design and function.

Now, more than thirty challenging yet highly rewarding years later, what was originally my grandfather's carpet manufacturing and importing company has grown substantially and expanded internationally. But whatever Michaelian & Kohlberg's changes these many years, I will always remain firmly committed to creating beautiful handmade rugs - rugs that resonate with true design and material integrity.

This catalog, designed and organized for use by design professionals, is a compendium of our most successful designs, as well as an expression of our dedication to the extraordinary art and craft of the handmade rug. As always, we at Michaelian & Kohlberg greatly appreciate your business and welcome your comments and suggestions.

Teddy Signature

Sincerely,

Teddy Sumner
