For over 80 years Michaelian & Kohlberg has been an innovator, constantly introducing groundbreaking weaves, textures and finishes. By continually initiating new weaving techniques to compliment a vast catalog of patterns, Michaelian & Kohlberg is able offer designers and architects high-quality handknotted options for almost any interior.
Michaelian & Kohlberg carpets are always woven using the highest quality, long-staple Highland sheep wool. This wool is never bleached and is processed entirely by hand. The process of hand carding and spinning wool maintains both the integrity of the wool fiber as well as its natural lanolin content.
A pioneer in the modern use of natural dyes in decorative rugs, Michaelian & Kohlberg remains committed to producing a substantial number of rug designs using only vegetable dyes. When synthetic dyes are used in combination with natural dyes, it is to insure accurate and consistent color reproduction for a specific aesthetic effect.
Since the early 1980s, Michaelian & Kohlberg's reintroduction of the artisanal crafts associated with handknotted carpet manufacture has employed thousands in China, India and Nepal. In addition, M&K's rug weaving endeavors, particularly in India and China, have been widely credited with creating a renaissance in contemporary handknotted rug manufacture.
