Overview

OverviewFounded in 1921, Michaelian & Kohlberg designs and creates fine handmade decorative carpets for high-end residential, office and hospitality interiors. Our carpets are handmade in Nepal, India, Afghanistan and China and are available through Michaelian & Kohlberg showrooms and our network of specialty carpet dealers.

Teddy Sumner, grandson of company founder, Frank Michaelian, is both owner and principal designer at Michaelian & Kohlberg. A trained and highly skilled fine artist, Sumner is continually inspired by his extensive world travels and his profound love of nature. Considered a master colorist, Sumner has made the Michaelian & Kohlberg name synonymous with carpets that combine innovative textures and weaves with sophisticated, design-forward palettes.

As his American Primitive, Out of India and Road to Langtang Collections attest, Sumner's design work embodies an aesthetic sophistication rarely seen in today's contemporary decorative rugs. Original as well as versatile in terms of application, Michaelian Signature patterns such as Griffon, Grass, Jamboree, Hibiscus and Horizons are now considered design classics in the world of contemporary handknotted rugs.
