n
exhibit at the Michaelian and Kohlberg Gallery in New
York is a collection of 19th and early 20th century
carpets from Sinkiang in the south west of China and
Inner Mongolia to the north. These rugs are mostly pictorial
which is unusual as a weaving tradition. The Khotan
rugs are from the Oasis towns of the Gobi desert and
are typified by flowers, table top settings, landscapes,
all viewed in a horizontal format and executed in strikingly
vivid colors in an abstract flattened manner. The Mongolian
carpets, probably from near the town of Paotow are more
graphically rendered as bucholic scenes such as the
village setting with geese shown here.
