Michaelian & Kohlberg’s
Mahindra Production from India:

In 1989 Michaelian & Kohlberg and their partnership company Black Mountain Looms, introduced their first Mahindra Collection of handmade Indian carpets. These luminous carpets, all woven with high quality hand-spun, naturally dyed wool, initiated a carpet-weaving renaissance in India.
Before 1900 India’s fabled carpet-weaving workshops produced some of the finest and most desired decorative carpets ever made. But by the mid-20th century, the pervasive use of inferior grade machine spun wool, synthetic dyes, flat colors and rote renderings of traditional designs caused Indian carpets to fall out of favor.
The challenge of reinvigorating India’s venerable carpet industry was undertaken by Michaelian & Kohlberg in the 1980s. Old techniques of hand spinning were taught in organized spinning clinics. Villagers were retaught the skills associated with cultivating, harvesting, and using indigenous vegetal dyestuffs. The result of this considerable effort was Michaelian & Kohlberg’s signature Mahindra Collection.
Michaelian & Kohlberg:

Founded by the grandfather of current owner, Teddy Sumner, Michaelian & Kohlberg has been producing fine, handmade decorative carpets from India, China and Nepal since 1921. With showrooms in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, Michaelian & Kohlberg continues to offers fine hand-knotted carpets in a wide variety of designs and weaves in both custom and standard sizes and colors. |
