his past autumn Michaelian and Kohlberg’s owner and designer Teddy Sumner took part in an innovative, cross-cultural exhibition in Sao Paulo, Brazil featuring Michaelian & Kohlberg’s hand-knotted carpets and sculptural objects created by the Brazilian artist, Ivald Granato. This highly acclaimed exhibition, titled "Miscigenacao: do Brasil a India", was sponsored by the Sao Paolo rug dealer , Rugs by Kamy, and was on view at the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture between 25 October and 6 November, 2005.
With over 5,000 square feet of display space devoted to Sumner’s carpets and Granato’s sculpture, museum goers could on a large scale explore the interplay of modern artistic forms with traditional motifs, textures and colors. Drawn from Michaelian and Kohlbergs’s Out of India and American Primitive Collections, the displayed carpets all featured complex color palettes as well as the incorporation of traditional textile motifs into their asymmetric and bold contemporary patterns.
Over 700 people attended the opening reception and the exhibit was widely covered in Brazil’s print and television with four reviews in the local press and two live television interviews conducted at the reception. .
Ivald Grantos was born in Campos and started painting early in life. He attended the School of Beautiful Arts of the Federal University of Rio De Janeiro. His work includes silkscreens and lithography and he has authored several books. He resides and works in Sao Paulo.
Teddy Sumner, a grandson of the Michaelian & Kohlberg’s founder, has since the early 1980s been the driving force behind Michaelian & Kohlberg’s continued expansion and transformation into a premier trade source for decorative rugs. He attended the painting program at the University of Washington and continues to work in various media. He resides in the New York metropolitan area.
