M&K Rugs from Nepal

  • M&K has been producing carpets in Nepal for over 35 years. Nepalese carpets are often referred to as Tibetan carpets because of the Tibetan knot structure, the sheep fleece which originates in Tibet, and the fact that the Tibetan community living in Nepal largely controls this business. Although there is wide range of qualitiy in rugs being woven in Nepal today, M&K Tibetan rugs have long been regarded as a model of the finest quality.

  • The subtle color variation results from hand-carded and hand-spun wool which is then dyed by hand in large fire heated pots. The fleece itself is transported over the Himalayas from the Tibetan plateau where a particular breed of ship coupled with the extreme environment produces the lanolin rich large fiber sheep fleece perfect for M&K carpets. Most other Nepalese rugs today are woven with New Zealand wool which though flawless and evenly white, is more suitable for clothing.
